Checking in and out is a simple but powerful way to open and close any group session. It sets the tone, creates space for people to be present, and reminds everyone they’re part of something shared.
Done well, it helps people feel seen and heard.

Step 1: Check-In
If you’re face-to-face, sit in a circle or horseshoe so everyone can see each other. Online, keep cameras on if possible.
Choose a check-in question that fits the group and the moment.
You might ask something simple like:
“How are you arriving today?”
“What do you need to let go of to be fully present?”
“What’s one word that describes your mindset right now?”
For groups who know each other well, you can mix it up with something more playful:
“What animal sums up your mood today?”
“What’s your superhero power pose?”
A good check-in invites honesty without pressure. People can share as much or as little as they want.
Step 2: Go Round the Group
Invite people to check in, one by one. You can go round the circle or let people speak when they feel ready. Once everyone’s spoken, the check-in is done.
Step 3: Check-Out
At the end of the session, gather the group again - sitting or standing in a circle or semi-circle if you’re in person.
Ask a check-out question that helps people reflect and close the space. Examples:
“What’s one thing you’re taking away from today?”
“What’s your biggest insight or learning?”
“What’s your mood as you leave this session?”
As with check-in, everyone shares briefly - one by one or in any order.
Step 4: Finish the Round
Once everyone’s had a chance to check out, the session is complete.
